What is ChatGPT and Why You Should Care
ChatGPT has become a buzzword and hot topic over the last few months. But what exactly is it? Is it a friend or foe? Will it take over the digital marketing industry? Should you include it as part of your digital marketing strategy? This blog breaks down everything you need to know about ChatGPT, AI-powered content, and how it’s changing the digital marketing landscape.
What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is a language model built by OpenAi that creates content based on what you, the user, requests. This type of automated content creation program isn’t necessarily new, but what is new is how it interacts with you and the fact that it gives you one answer rather than multiple options to choose from. ChatGPT is able to answer follow-up questions, admit mistakes, challenge incorrect premises, and reject inappropriate requests. As an industry, AI content creation software can write as much or as little copy as you need based on your subject. The program uses natural language processing to help automate the messaging you need by tone and content.
How to Use AI Content Creation Software
Depending on which company you go with, you can get copy generated online or even sent to you by text! Need a blog written about the basics of baking cookies? No problem. Need help writing an email asking your boss for time off? You got it. All you need to do is tell the bot the subject you want it to write about, what type of content output you need, and specify the tone of your message.
What are the Pros of Automated Content Creation
It’s a Time Saver
As of 2022, more than 1,000 bloggers said it took them over four hours to write a single blog. For a copywriter, that time might be cut in half. But for someone who isn’t a professional content writer who has to run a business, four hours is a lot of time away from running day-to-day operations. So, for someone short on time AI for content creation can act as one of your best employees.
Create a Variety of Content for Your Business
No matter what industry you’re in, content has to be a tool in your ‘successful business’ arsenal. From informative blogs to quirky social posts, online content serves as the gateway for future customers to find your business. If you know what you want to talk about, AI content creation software can help build up your online presence by writing copy for your website or blogs.
From Casual to Professional
As you know, no two customers are the same. They might have similarities (like coffee, having a dog, etc.), but each customer has their own motivators and responses to messaging. With automated content creation, you can tweak your messaging to have either a more serious or casual tone that will resonate with your audience.
What are the cons of automated content creation
Google Wants You to Keep it Original
While using AI for content creation has its benefits, one of the biggest disadvantages you’ll have to navigate around is how unoriginal the content is. This concern will mainly be for website copy because Google ranks websites higher or lower on their search engine based on different qualities: Is it helpful? Is it relevant? And, most importantly… is it original? If you’re still not following, one of our favorite ex-Googlers, Jyll Gales, illustrates this problem on her Instagram.
You Might Get Outdated Information
Just because ChatGPT and other copy AI software comb through their algorithm, filtering their findings to create the content you need, doesn’t always mean that what it generates will be correct. Because of its programming, it’s only able to search and pull information through 2021, so any information you need after that point is limited and can be outdated. So, for example, if you need a blog about new features or trends for the year, you might want to do some manual research and writing to ensure the content is correct.
Generated Content Might be Too Random
This point ties into the con above, but since automated content is being generated based on what exists on the internet, it will piece together sentences it finds into what is hopefully a natural, cohesive statement. But let us just say some of the things it generates are… awkward. It might be a less common issue when you’re generating short-form copy, like a social post. But those awkward sentences being pieced together in longer form content, like a blog, might be more obvious.
While the jury is still out on if ChatGPT is the next big thing for automated content creation, there’s no doubt about two things: this software isn’t going anywhere and will only get smarter as time passes. But, if you’re in the content creation business, you don’t have to worry about updating your resume, as ChatGPT still needs a human to tell it what to search and what to create. But, our personal verdict is to keep it original by writing your own content, especially since you are the subject matter expert. This tool can be an excellent way to gain insight into what information is most popular on the internet as it relates to your subject. Or, if you truly have writer’s block, this tool might be a great way to get you started on your next piece of content.
